Wind, fumes, and volcanic rock

Aso Volcano

Located in central Kyushu, Japan, Aso is an active volcanic complex known for its vast caldera. Formed by four major eruptions between 300,000 and 90,000 years ago, the caldera defines the region’s dramatic landscape. Nakadake, one of Aso’s active craters, erupted in 2021.

With access to the area around Nakadake restricted during our visit, we headed instead to nearby Mt. Kishima, where a hiking trail follows the rim of its crater. From the summit, sweeping views open up across the Aso landscape.

Although we couldn’t approach Nakadake’s crater, Aso offered plenty to explore. If you’re visiting Kyushu, we recommend making time for this remarkable volcanic landscape.
