Located in the center of Kyushu, Japan, the Aso volcano group is one of Japan’s active volcanoes. Between 300,000 to 90,000 years ago, the Aso volcano erupted four times, resulting in the formation of the current vast and expansive caldera. Among them, the Nakadake crater remains active, with its latest eruption recorded in 2021. Therefore, the area within 1 kilometer of the Nakadake crater is still designated as a restricted zone.
We instead opt to enter the nearby caldera, Mt. Kishima, where a hiking trail surrounds the volcano’s crater. Upon reaching the summit, you can also enjoy panoramic views of the entire Aso region.
Despite the current restrictions around the Nakadake crater, if you have the opportunity to visit Kyushu, we still recommend visiting Aso volcano and explore its unique and magnificent volcanic landscape.
