An Unexpected Detour
After spending two nights in the small northern Italian town of Auronzo, we set off toward the Dolomites. Not long into the journey, a tire blowout brought our plans to a halt.
Fortunately, we met a local named Matteo, who helped us get the car towed and safely off the road. Even so, without a vehicle, we could no longer reach the campsite we had planned to stay at, and there were no nearby accommodations available. So that evening, we pitched our tent beside the road and spent the night there, taking an unplanned pause before continuing on.
The following morning, we boarded a bus and headed back toward the mountains.
As the landscape opened up, we arrived at a region scattered with alpine lakes. We stopped for a while, resting in the sun and taking in the stillness of the surroundings. Moments like these often become the ones that stay with you long after the trip is over.
Later that day, we finally reached Rifugio Locatelli.
Situated on the northern side of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the mountain hut faces one of the most recognizable views in the Dolomites. After a series of unexpected detours, it felt good simply to arrive.
As evening approached, we wandered around the area surrounding the hut, watching the last light move across the peaks. The colors slowly shifted before fading into the night, leaving the silhouette of Tre Cime standing quietly against the sky., taking an unplanned pause before continuing on.
The next morning, we woke before sunrise. The mountains were nearly silent. As daylight gradually reached the peaks, the landscape changed from cool grey to warm orange, revealing the scale of the terrain around us.
Leaving Locatelli behind, we continued along the trail. Along the way, we passed a smaller mountain hut. It lacked the scale and attention of Locatelli, but felt welcoming in its own way—more like a small house in a quiet village than a stop along a famous hiking route.
Further ahead, a cold stream flowed between the rocks. We stopped briefly, refilled our bottles, and rested beside the water before moving on. Throughout the Dolomites, it was often these smaller moments that shaped the experience as much as the landscapes themselves. The blowout was never part of the plan. But it changed the pace of the trip and led us through places we otherwise would have passed by. From a roadside campsite and an early morning bus ride to quiet lakes, mountain huts, and the open views around Tre Cime, the journey unfolded through a series of unexpected moments. In the end, those moments stayed with us as much as the destination itself.
